Last month my husband and I drove nine hours to Mount Desert Campground in Acadia National Park, Maine, for a week - by ourselves....
We were last in Acadia in May - our seventh trek to the rocky, salt filled shores. This would be our eighth. I wonder if other people experience this pull back to one place, or maybe even this same place?
We come back to Acadia for the the iron rung trails, the rocky shores and for Cafe This Way (best blueberry pancakes ever). A week away, when you have children, is akin to winning the lottery. We love our children (of course) and it takes a certain recipe for me to be able to soak in the experience and keep the guilt and separation anxiety at bay.
If you are ever in the need of an escape, Bar Harbor and Acadia are at the top of my list.
Eat breakfast here, mac + cheese here and dinner here.
Shop at Rock and Art Shop
Stop at Jordan Pond House for a Blueberry Mojito (and hike Jordan's cliff while you're at it) + visit the Atlantic Brewery for a tour and a tasting.
Our favourite hikes include Champlain Mountain, Precipice and Cadillac Mountain via the Ladder.
Camp at Blackwoods Campground (basic) or Mount Desert (oh that view).
Rent here or here (they're both fabulous), or stay at this B&B.
Alright, fall is coming to an end so maybe Acadia's not in the cards until next year - pick up this book by Christina Baker Kline and you might just fall for the place vicariously.
Do you have a favourite road-trip destination? I'd love to hear.
