Fraternal or Identical?

There is an open debate about whether our babies are fraternal or identical.  One would logically think that given that we transferred two embryos and that we now are pregnant with twins... they must be fraternal....however, given this picture below it may lead you to believe that the three percent odds that we were quoted regarding our chances of one of our two embryos splitting and becoming an identical twin were slightly skewed.  That or we are just a crazy exception.

I know this picture makes it look like they are sharing one sac but I swear you could see a faint membrane between them during the ultrasound.  The on call doctor on Friday thought that the membrane was just very thin and that they are fraternal.  The on call doctor yesterday congratulated me on the rare instance of identical twins.  So we just don't know.

Want to take a guess?

  2. I don't see a line there, but you know how ultrasounds are... difficult to read!

    Either way, twins are awesome!

  5. Wow, when I read the header on my blogger dashboard, I was like, of course fraternal! But now looking at the picture, I don't know... Either way, as long as they are healthy, who cares :) Thanks for posting the pic, very intriguing.

  10. Just blog hopped here. Congratulations on your pregnancy! Whether your twins are identical or fraternal it would be very rare, not to mention very dangerous, for there not to be a membrane there. I'll keep my fingers crossed that even if they are identical, the first doctor was right and they're not monoamniotic.

As for crazy exceptions & odds, we were given a "less than 1% chance" of having triplets when transferring 2 embryos... :)

  11. It would be awesome to have twins. Congratulations! It is so miraculous! Would not it be nice to have boy and girl at once? But, two girls or two boys would rock, too. I am so excited for you. Take care!

  12. there are lots of different types of twins and some share the same placenta - BUT - if they share the same sac - separating membrane or not, they will be identical twins - fraternal twins have separate gestational sacs - identical twins are always boy+boy or girl+girl never one of each - the concern is that if there is no membrane there is a risk they can get tangled up
